What are clear aligners, and how do they work?
Clear aligners are a modern orthodontic treatment that gradually straightens your teeth using a series of custom-made trays. Each aligner applies gentle, controlled pressure, guiding your teeth a small step closer to their final position before you move on to the next set.
Compared with traditional braces, clear aligners offer a few genuine advantages:
- No brackets or wires against your teeth or gums
- Removable, so eating isn’t restricted the way it can be with braces
- Easier to brush and floss, since you simply take them out first
Because they’re removable and virtually invisible, clear aligners suit patients who want straighter teeth without changing how their smile looks day to day.
Is clear aligner treatment right for you?
Clear aligners suit many teens and adults with mild to moderate orthodontic concerns, including:
- Crooked or crowded teeth
- Overbites, underbites, and gaps between teeth
- Minor bite misalignments
For more complex cases or where extractions are needed to create space, traditional braces may still be the better option. Our dentists will assess your teeth, gums, and bite during a consultation and recommend the treatment most likely to deliver the best results for your particular case.

Clear aligners vs traditional braces
Both clear aligners and traditional braces can achieve straighter teeth, but they suit different patients and different cases. Traditional braces use fixed brackets and wires, so they stay on your teeth around the clock and generally handle more complex movements, including cases that require extractions to create space.
Clear aligners take a different approach. Because they’re removable, you can take them out to eat whatever you like, brush and floss as normal, and put them back in afterwards. Most patients also find clear aligners more comfortable day-to-day, since there’s no metal against the inside of their cheeks or gums.
Neither option is automatically “better.” Our dentists will talk you through the pros and cons of each at your consultation, based on what your teeth actually need rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
How clear aligner treatment works
Treatment begins with an initial consultation. Your dentist will assess your teeth, gums and bite to confirm suitability, then create a personalised treatment plan using digital scans, so you can see a preview of how your smile will develop.
Once approved, your first set of aligners is produced. These removable aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours a day and replaced with a new set every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on your progress. Each stage gently shifts your teeth closer to their ideal position until treatment is complete.
How long this takes depends on the complexity of your case and how consistently you wear your aligners. Most patients complete treatment within 12 to 18 months, though some start noticing changes within a few weeks. Your dentist will review your progress every six to eight weeks, provide your next set, and make any necessary adjustments to keep things on track.
Caring for your clear aligners
A few simple habits keep your aligners working properly and your mouth healthy throughout treatment:
- Rinse your aligners each time you take them out
- Brush and floss your teeth before putting them back in
- Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic
- Store them in their case whenever they’re out of your mouth
Good oral hygiene matters more during clear aligner treatment, not less, since plaque can build up against your teeth if aligners are put back in without cleaning.
